Tor a.k.a The Onion Router is a worldwide network that protects your identity online and enables you to browse the internet anonymously. Although current security measures are deemed “good enough” by most users, Tor has been created to go farther for users who want to get as anonymous and safe as possible. There are prying eyes on you ranging from Governments, local Internet Service Providers (ISP), or even hackers out there trying to get a piece of your information. However, individuals should use caution and do their own research on the legal status of Tor within their jurisdiction.The Internet is not always a secure place for exchanging information. It’s important to remember that Tor is not only used for darknet purposes but also as a tool for journalists, whistleblowers, political dissidents, activists, and vulnerable people to protect their identities or that of their sources. In most jurisdictions using Tor is not illegal. Many privacy-focused Bitcoin applications incorporate Tor to help protect users’ identities from bad actors who may be snooping on the network. Like crypto, Tor is primarily meant to be used for censorship resistance and privacy. However, Tor is not strictly for illegal activity. Tor was used as a gateway to the infamous Silk Road and other darknet markets which primarily use Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies like Monero (XMR) as a means of exchange. The Tor Project is a non-profit which maintains both the Tor network and the Tor Browser which is an open-source web browser that automatically connects via Tor. When a user connects to the Tor network, their traffic is routed via three random nodes or relays before arriving at its final point.
Tor achieves this via a mix of encryption and indirect routing. Tor is a network that allows users to connect to the internet in a decentralized and anonymous way.
